Sussex County is the northernmost county in New Jersey. Despite being considered part of the greater New York City metropolitan area, the geography of Sussex County has made it more difficult to develop than other areas so that the area remains relatively rural with pocketed populated areas, but also a tremendous amount of wild space.
Because Sussex County is well above sea level, it does not seem like an area that would be at high risk of flooding. However, it is an area characterized by mountains, ridges, and valleys, and anytime there are valleys surrounded by high areas, there is a risk of flooding. Kittatinny Mountain, which is part of the Appalachian Range, is in the western part of the County, and the Delaware Water Gap, which runs along the Delaware River, is another major geological features. In addition, there are numerous watersheds in the region. In fact, the area is water-rich, with rivers running in multiple directions and multiple lakes, including: the Wallkill River, Pochuck Creek, Papakating Creek, Clove Creek, Flat Brook, Little Flat Brook, Big Flat Brook, Paulins Kill, West Branch, Lake Owassa, Culver’s Lake, Dry Brook, the Delaware River, the Pequest River, the Musconetcong River, Lake Hopatcong, Lubbers Run, Punkhorn Creek, the Pequannock River, the Passaic River, and Rockaway River. Like much of New Jersey, the presence of so much water means that remediation efforts have to be complete, removing all dampness or else the property owner runs the risk of mold or mildew, which can be more than a nuisance.
