Somerset County, New Jersey is not only one of the oldest counties in New Jersey, but in the entire United States. It was settled in 1681 and played an important role in the American Revolutionary War when General George Washington and his troops quartered in many homes throughout the area. The county is ripe with history, thought it spent much of its early years focused primarily on agriculture, weapons, and manufacturing. While part of Somerset County historically served as a place for summer homes for wealthy industrialists, it was not until the 1960s that it became a popular residential area. The result is an eclectic mix of old historic homes and estates and newer subdivisions that developed to provide housing to people working in developing industry in Somerset and surrounding counties as well as people commuting into the city for work.
The historic nature of the county means that preservation is paramount when doing restoration or remediation work. Unfortunately, parts of Somerset County have been shown to be very vulnerable to exactly the type of flood damage that Statewide Solution fixes, as much of it was devastated by Hurricane Floyd in 1999. While the county took extraordinary steps to try to prevent that type of damage in the future, whether those efforts will be successful may not be revealed unless the coastline experiences another Cape Verde style hurricane.
